A solar power station in space

By 2030, Japan planned to tieve geostationary orbit (36,000 km above the Earth) a plant equipped with lots of photovoltaic panels that convert solar energy into electricity, with an annual capacity of 5 to 10 times higher than the panels used on land. This energy is transformed in turn into energy flows or microwave beams transmitted to Earth, where they would be captured by a giant satellite dish that would convert into electricity.

"As sunlight is a form of clean and inexhaustible energy, we believe this system can help solve the problems of insufficient energy and global warming due to greenhouse gases," write the researchers. The project development is provided by the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and the Research Institute of Space Device uninhabited, which brings together 17 companies, including electronics groups Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Fujitsu and Sharp.
