Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Details of the eagerly awaited full frame Canon 5D Mark II dSLR are out. The camera packs a whopping 16MP full frame sensor, comes with full weather sealing and anti-dust features, and has the ability to rattle out images at 6 FPS.

The full-frame sensor has been boosted up to 21.1 megapixels, the LCD is a high-resolution 3-inch beauty (like more recently released competitors), Live View shooting has been added, the sensitivity range has been raised to ISO 50 - ISO 25,600, auto focus points have been bumped from 9 to 15 points, and continuous shooting speed has been bumped from 3- to 3.9fps. Best of all, however, Canon has added HD (1920�1080,16:9) video capture at 30 fps (there�s also a standard TV quality 640�480, 4:3 setting as well), besting recently announced competitors like the Nikon D700 and Sony Alpha DSLR-A900. In fact, the consumer-oriented Nikon D90 is the only other dSLR to offer a video mode at the moment.

Canon plans to ship the 5D Mark II by the end of November for $2,699 (body-only) or in a kit version with the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens $3,499, making it very competitively priced compared to the competition.

Hitachi's New Blu-ray Camcorder: DZ-BD10HA

The Hitachi model DZ-BD10HA model Blu-ray Hybrid with built-in 30GB hard disk drive (HDD) is priced at a Manufacturers Advertised Price (MAP) of $999. The camcorder will be available in Japan on August 9th and will be available in North America in September 2008.

A step above from its predecessor announced last year, the DZ-BD10HA from Hitachi's Consumer Group contains several new features and improvements. A newly developed 7 mega pixel CMOS image sensor, which captures rich and vibrant videos and stills in FullHD (1920 x 1080) High Definition. The new DZ-BD10HA can also record up to 4 hours 20 minutes of 1920x1080 video or 8 hours 40 minutes of 1440x1080 video onto the built-in 30 GB HDD. Additionally, the built-in SDHC card slot provides added flexibility by allowing for Full HD video and still recordings.

The new DZ-BD10HA also offers a dubbing function that allows Full HD video to be transferred with the single push of a button from either the HDD or SDHC card to the BD drive, all within the camcorder, without having to connect to a PC. Editing functions such as split, splice, delete, merge, and transitions can also be performed within the camcorder before dubbing for additional functionality. The Transcoding feature allows for the camcorder to transfer full HD videos off the HDD or SDHC card to standard definition DVD discs for the sharing of videos with friends and family who may not own a Blu-ray player yet.

Another new feature added to this year's camcorder is face detection, which automatically detects and focuses on faces to provide the most true to life colour accuracy and clarity. Additionally, Hitachi has developed a compact, low power consumption, quiet and highly reliable 8cm BD/DVD drive, which results in a 20% reduction in overall volume compared with last year's DZ-BD7HA Blu-ray hybrid camcorder.

One-Touch Dubbing

FujiFilm's FinePix 10 megapixel S2000HD with 15x wide

At first glance and looking at the specifications the Fujifilm S2000hd is a Megazoom camera with a 14.7x optical zoom range (28-414 mm equiv. 35 mm camera), improved Face Detection system and, of course, HD (High Definition) mode to capture MPEG-4 16:9 movies in 1920x1080 resolution. Sanyo Xacti DMX-HD800

Sanyo Electric Co Ltd will launch the "Xacti DMX-HD800," a camcorder supporting 720p HDTV resolution, in Japan Aug 22, 2008. A new sleek, slim high definition dual camera Xacti that can take both stills and videos. The camera sports a compact and light-weight body, and easily saves data onto SD/SDHC memory cards for convenience. The DMX-HD800 will take stills and videos used on a personal computer or for the Web, houses a new three-dimensional digital noise reduction (3DDNR) filter, and adds the �Face Chaser� for both stills and videos with an active scanner visible on the monitor.

To enable the 3D noise reduction function, the camcorder uses an image processing LSI dubbed "Platinum S engine," which is also adopted in the higher-end model "DMX-HD1010" released in June 2008. Random noise generated along the time-axis can be reduced by the 3D noise reduction function. Thus, the compression rate when coding is reportedly increased by 10-15%, compared with the existing model (DMX-HD700).
